Can't tell you where I heard this because I don't want to get anyone into bother...and the person that told me might be winding me up!
This next series of Heartbeat will be the last with the series ending on what is supposed to be new years eve 1969 at midnight (in other words 1970).
Nick Berry and Jason Durr will make cameo appearences in the last series but not in the last episode. Gina and Phil will marry in the second to last episode.

Keith Richardson said that he would keep making it as long as viewers wanted to watch it! In my case that's a very long time left. Please please please do not do this to us

I have to say, that when i met Derek Fowlds, he said he expected the show to last this series and another one (but don't quote me on that. lol). So, although it hasn't been confirmed, i think it's likely that the end is nigh for Heartbeat (ie. next couple of years). Unfortunately. I think they'd be mad to stop it, but i can see why the would.

I don't know how many times I have read about Heartbeat being axed.
In fact I once rang Granada to check on it. They said ( More or less ) we'd be extremely daft to get rid of a programme that brought in so many viewers.
As regards Derek Fowlds, I did read ages ago that he was getting to retirement age, but nothing has been said since.
