I got next weeks TvTimes today and there was a small article and picture in it with John Duttine, the new sarge. I don't have a scanner for the picture but I typed out the article in case anybody was interested.
GOING BACK TO HIS ROOTS
John Duttine is one of those actors who consistantly pops up on our TV Screens as a guest in shows such as Dalzeil and Pascoe and The Bill. But, by his own admission, it's been a long time since he was a regular in a series. "I think we're talking well over 20 years," recalls the 55-year-old, "probably the last time was To Serve Them All My Days in the early eighties. "I played a schoolteacher recovering from shell shock after World War One." That role, incidently, earned John TVTimes's Best Actor Award in 1980! John is about to change all that by joining feelgood favourite heartbeat next month. He's been cast as Aidensfield's new policeman, Sgt. George Miller - and this particular plod has no time for the nicities of villiage life. "Miller is sharp-tempered and a real disciplinarian," says John. "He's on a mission to knock the station into shape." Sounds a bundle of fun! But this thespian is keen to point out that his character isn't all that bad, "Inside, he's a very sensitive copper, honest!" However, in spite of his delight, John and his actress wife, mel Martin, who played the mother of Karen (Hermoine Norris) in Cold Feet, faced a dilemmna. "For the past seven years we've been living in Cornwall in a farmhouse which we renovated and ran as a B&B," reveals John. "We love being beside the sea, but I knew this role was too good an oppertunity to miss, so I've taken a place in Yorkshire. Luckily, Mel was totally supportive, plus I'm originally from the area, so returning to my roots isn't too hard". And John is no stranger to Heartbeat, either. "I appeared in the very first series, with Nick Berry, 13 years ago. So working with people like Derek Fowlds (Oscar) and others was like meeting up with old friends." So did John ever have a sneaking suspiscion that he might end up patrolling the Dales? "Never, it's been a lovely surprise," he laughs.
Ready for law and disorder in Heartbeat: John Duttine as new sergeant George Miller.
