I found this article in a magazine whilst at the dentists this morning:-
Life after Katie
Maria Harding talks to the ex-heartbeat youngster Alice 10 and her mother Joanne Jones, about how her daughter's life has changed for the better.
When Dr Kate Rowan (played by Niamh Cusack) gave birth to a baby girl named Sarah, nobody could have been happier than Joanne Jones. This was because her then 6-week-old daughter Alice had been chosen to play the part of little Sarah, along with twins Amelia and Emily Wright. "I had a visit from the casting director, It was a shock really in a way!" says Joanne 34, from Guiseley, West Yorkshire. So just weeks after little Alice was shunted into the limelight. There were originally three playing young Sarah, but the sad time came for Joanne when YTV announed that the twins would be playing the sweet youngster, due to their filming schedule. "I was quite heartbroken, but they told me, that when she was a little older, they may reconsider" remembers Joanne.
Viewers will remember that just after Sarah was born, mum Kate died of leaukemia, even Joanne admits she cried during the filming! "Alice was in the episode when she died, and I just remember standing there, watching Niamh cuddling my baby, crying, it just started me off". Sarah who was renamed Katherine "Katie" by father Pc Nick Rowan (Nick Berry), was played by twins Amelia and Emily Wright, the twin daughters of Heartbeat-script supervisor Karen Wright. Alice, however was the one in the pictures with Nick and the policemen, says Joanne a full time mother to Alice, and her two younger sisters - Katie 6 and Chloe 3 who also appeared in the show as a baby in episode "The Leopards spots" in series 12. "It was nice to be reunited with many of the stars and crew, they all remembered me" laughs Joanne. In series six, Alice was reunited with the show, when she played a young girl, with troubled parents. "That was the beginning of her re-launch of Katie, I suppose". "Alice is actually good friends with Amelia and Emily Wright also 10, I still meet up with Karen, their mother every so often". After the short appearance in series six, Joanne was asked if Alice would play Katie again, It was a dream come ture for Joanne and husband Mark 42 a teacher. "Nick and Alice just clicked from the very first moment" says Joanne. "Alice was a bit shy with Juliette (who played Katie's step-mother Jo), but she soon treated her as her "second mum"" says Joanne.
Joanne remembers some of her favourite episodes. "Oh yes, I know - there's an episode in series seven, when the Nick's auntie is talking to Katie about what she wants for Christmas and Katie says "A dolls house and a teddy" that makes me smile", another one is when Nick and Jo get married, Alice had a gorgeous bridesmaids dress, I actually bought it off Yorkshire Television, she looked so sweet in it" says Joanne, handing over a picture of Nick, Jo, Katie and Jo's bridesmaid Maggie (Kazia Pelka) in their wedding gear.
The sad time came though when Joanne was asked to go to a meeting with the producers, "I thought this was it, as Nick had told me the possibility of him leaving, I was upset, because the cast and crew had become our extended family". That was not the end, Juliette, Alice and Nick were sped off to Lake Louise in Canada to film the "Rowans move to Canada". "It was fabulous in Canada, Alice loved all the cast, she got on very well with Sargeant Hudakof who adored Alice and she loved being with all the cast" smiles Joanne.
On the last night we had a party with the cast and crew and I started crying as I knew this was the end.
And for the future? "I would love Alice to do more episodes of Heartbeat, oh yes". Alice had a great oportunity, that she enjoyed and is proud of, she's only Alice Natasha Jones to her friends, and that is what she will remain as".
"I will never forget my time, I don't remember much, but the photos will be able to help me remember" says Alice 10. "I go to school with Amelia and Emily" says the Yorkshire star.
