[ftp]ARTIST: Irving Berlin TITLE: Putting On the Ritz Lyrics and Chords
[ Abdim7 = ; Bbdim7 = ]
Have you seen the well-to-do up and down Park Avenue On that famous thoroughfare with their noses in the air High hats and Arrow collars, white spats and lots of dollars Spending every dime for a wonderful time
/ Dm Abdim7 Em7 A7 Dm Abdim7 Em7 A7 / / F Abdim7 C7 - F Abdim7 C7 - / / A6 Bbdim7 Bm7 E7 A6 Bbdim7 Bm7 E7 / / F#m F#m7 B7 - E7 - A7 - /
If you're blue and you don't know where to go to Why don't you go where fashion sits Puttin' on the Ritz
/ Dm - - - - / - - - A7 A7sus4 A7 - / Dm - Bb A7 /
Diff'rent types who wear a day coat, pants with stripes And cutaway coat, perfect fits Puttin' on the Ritz
Dressed up like a million dollar trouper Trying hard to look like Gary Cooper Super duper
/ Gm - - D7 Gm - C7 - / F Dm7 Gm7 C7 F - / Bb A7 /
Come let's mix where Rockefellers walk with sticks Or "um-ber-ellas" in their mitts Puttin' on the Ritz
Strolling down the avenue so happy All dressed up just like an English chappie Very snappy
You'll declare it's simply "top-thing" to be there And hear them swapping smart tidbits Puttin' on the Ritz

U ... (The) Unicorn (Words and music by Shel Silverstein)
A long time ago when the earth was green, There were more kinds of animals than you'd ever seen. They'd run around free when the ark was bring born, But the loveliest of them all was the Unicorn.
There were green alligators and long-necked geese, Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees, Some cats and rats and elephants, But sure as you're born The loveliest of them all was the Unicorn.

X ... can't think of one Y ... "You Can Tango, You Can Trot Dear" and, if I've done it correctly, clicking on the image will give you the music. Dance themes continued well into later decades and in one 1914 work, Von Tilzer and Andrew B. Sterling managed to combine forces again for a wonderful novelty song that capitalized on the Tango, Fox-trotand another popular dance of the time, the Hesitation Waltz. With the intriguing, and somewhat long title, You Can Tango You Can Trot Dear But Be Sure And Hesitate, and a terrific cover by De Takacs, the song was one of 1914's greatest hits for Von Tilzer. Again, we see Sterling and Von Tilzer's senses of humor in creating a very entertaining novelty song that uses the dance styles in double meanings. A bit on the risqué side (for those days) there are many double meanings and plenty to read between the lines in the lyrics. Basically the song speaks of a young girl charmed by a handsome young beau and her mother's advice as to how to handle the closeness of dancing and the consequences that often follow. Mom sternly tells the girl to dance the tango and fox-trot but to be sure and hesitate (not the dance) at certain points in the process. Mom says, "If a squeeze is allowed, let it be where there is a crowd." She also warns her of the effects of wine and that there are other spots in a relationship where hesitation is wise. The music is typically upbeat and good natured as any novelty song worth its salt would be. The chorus is fun and fast paced. I'm sure you'll enjoy this one! Click the cover image or here to hear and see the Scorch version of this song or listen to the midi and see the Lyrics .
